I watched the new music video by Arcade Fire I got a little freaked out.
The video shows off the amazing capabilities of HTML5 - the new porposed web standard "language".
In essence HTML5 makes many new features available to web designers, including animation, video, interactive editors and so on. Techno-mumbo jumbo to most, but the possibilities are incredible as the experimental music video demonstrates:
When you view the video you arrive at a eery looking "start" page, featuring impressively animated flock of birds.
I say "impressive" because it looks real: they way birds normally behave. It is interactive, so the birds will try to avoid your cursor.
To simulate this behavour is not trivial - it is intended to demonstrate how highly sophisticated programs (scripts) can interact on a web page in a new and standard way.
You are prompted for the street address where you grew up.
Eeek! :-)
Don't be afraid, despite the creepy looking page - it is safe to enter your address...but enter your current address - not your childhood one. (You'll see why)
The site will now play you a music video with coriagraphed windows opening and closing giving you different and dynamic points of view and it will feature...drum roll...YOUR street. As in the place YOU LIVE! In the video. Wow.
Truly jaw dropping.
Then it asks you to leave a note to your younger self - which will be used in a "life tree"
It shows what the future web will probably look like: interactive, graphical, multi-media, personalized.

The technology on display here is truly amazing, but you chances are you won't even notice as you are sucked into this video.
